Chilli
The chilli pepper is the berry-fruit of plants from the genus Capsicum. The origin of chillies dates back to 7000 B.C. in Mexico. The people there used it to spice up their food. The spice was then spread in Asia and the rest of the world by Christopher Columbus who discovered America in 1493.
Chillies became a medium to start trade relations with Asia. Soon Chilli became a popular herb worldwide for its cooking uses as well as medicinal utilizations. Soon, Chilli found its way into the traditional Indian medical system – Ayurveda, for its medicinal properties such as stimulating good digestion and endorphins, a natural pain killer to relieve pains.
Today, more than 400 different varieties of chilies exist in the world.
