Sesame seeds, scientifically known as Sesamum indicum, are one of the oldest oilseed crops known. It is wildly cultivated and its plant is found in most of the tropical, subtropical, and southern temperate areas of the world. Sesame seeds are also called benne.
They are used in the food for flavoring and garnishing, and prized oil is extracted from them. With a rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the world.
These seeds are high in protein and are rich in thiamin and vitamin B6. Sesame has one of the highest oil contents of any seed.
